The Last Word
“Just Another Sunny Day in Pittsburgh”

What are the odds of winning a grand award in WPPI’s International Print Competition with your one and only print entry? Staggering. But that’s what Cal Landau did on his first entry into the 16x20 competition. The image, “Another Sunny Day in Pittsburgh,” enthralled judges with its humor, its amazing print quality and its overall theatrical quality.

Cal says of his image, “My competition image was taken on probably one of the best days for working the way I do. The site is a 100-year-old train overpass in Pittsburgh. The antique car was following and just as we pulled under the overpass, it started pouring. I told the driver to stop where he was. I drove about 75 yards further. A fellow Pittsburgh photographer challenged me to make something out of this disaster. I had two umbrellas with me. As we walked back to the antique car, we started walking like Charlie Chaplain, pretending to be swimming back to the car. We were getting really wet. By the time we got to the bride and groom they were laughing hard. We could have asked them to jump in the river and they would have done it. I just told them to ‘walk back to my car and be friendly with each other.’ As my friend Cyndi held the umbrella over me I shot 54 images of them walking back and forth. There were some shots in which the groom kept tilting the umbrella to get the bride wet and she would break out laughing. It was hard to pick an image to enter. The Pittsburgh group of photographers had to help me.

“The point I’m making about how I shoot is if the bride and groom see that you are the first one to get wet or get dirty laying on the ground to get a better shot, they will become a part of the team. I always tell them, ‘You make the pictures, I just save them.’”
