Heidi Mauracher, 1953–2003
Heidi Mauracher passed away on Friday, March 14, 2003 after a short battle
with cancer. Heidi is one of the most highly decorated portrait and
wedding photographers in the country and she is one of the highest
ranking Accolade Awards winners in WPPI history.
Heidi’s degrees
and awards are numerous. She holds the Master of Photography and Photographic
Craftsman degrees from the PPA. She earned
the Fellowship Degree, Service Degree and Photographic Business Arts
Degree from the Professional Photographers of California. She also earned
five Accolades of Photography Excellence from WPPI. Additionally, she
has gained the distinction of Fellowship with the British Institute of
Professional Photography and the Master Photographer’s Association
of Great Britain. Heidi has been awarded the Fellowship of American Society
of Photographers, the highest earned degree in professional photography
and she is the only photographer in the world to win this combination
of honors and degrees.
She is also the recipient of the 1994, 1997 and
2002 Grand Awards from WPPI. She is the only photographer in the association
to ever earn four
of these awards.
At this time, a Heidi Mauracher Scholarship Fund is
being set up on Heidi’s
behalf. Details will be appearing in future issues of Rangefinder.
New IPHF Exhibit
The International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum has opened a new
exhibition entitled, “Three Photographers, Three Perspectives.” This
exhibition has been organized by the Hall of Fame and features three
women photographers who have taken photography in three different directions.
Cindy Ritchie of Oklahoma City has achieved fine art photography in her
portrait studio. Cindy is a member of WPPI and has received 10 awards
for her work. In addition, she is the photographer for the University
of Oklahoma’s Women’s basketball team. Jai Gronemeier of
Norman, Oklahoma focuses her camera on unique architecture. Charlotte
Lowrie of Seattle, Washington is an accomplished photojournalist. The
exhibit runs from April 5 through June 30. For more information and images

John Gruber Dies
John B. Gruber unexpectedly died on the morning of February 18, 2003.
He will be greatly missed by the scores of people whose business lives
he touched over the past 58 years. At age 19, he went to work as an independent
sales representative for Art Albums, his father’s wedding album
manufacturing business. Soon he was also selling for other manufacturers
who made albums and picture presentation products, including, Topflight
Albums. Through John Gruber’s creative efforts, Topflight Albums
was the first album manufacturer to produce an embossed wedding album
for the professional market. At the time of his passing, John Gruber
was executive vice president in charge of Topflight Wedding and Custom
Presentation Products at D. Davis Kinney Company. John Gruber is survived
by his wife Carol, daughter Susan, sons John Jr. and Charles, and a sister
Jean Grampp.
David Williams Image CDs For Sale
David Williams, the popular and award-winning wedding and portrait photographer
from down under, is now offering two CDs, one containing about 120 wedding
and 120 portrait images. The other CD is a visual library of detail miniatures
for weddings—what to shoot and why. The CD includes instructional
presentation. Computers need to run Microsoft Powerpoint or equivalent

Fuji Promotions
Fuji Photo Film U.S.A., Inc., announced that William J. DiMinno, senior
vice president and general manager of the company’s Photo Imaging
Group, will retire from the company later this year. Paul D’Andrea,
currently vice president and general manager of Fujifilm’s Consumer
Markets Division, will assume DiMinno’s title and responsibilities,
effective April 1, 2003, at which time DiMinno will serve the company
as senior vice president, Strategic National Accounts, until his retirement
on October 1, 2003. Both will report to Stanley E. Freimuth, executive
vice president and chief operating officer, who made the announcement.
Epson Launches Hardware Recycling Program
Epson America Inc. is making it easy and affordable for customers who
care about the environment to help protect the Earth’s resources
with the launch of a hardware recycling program. The web-based Epson
Recycle Program is geared toward people who do not have convenient locations
to drop off electronics for recycling. Participants will pay $10 per
product to cover the cost of shipping and recycling eligible Epson hardware.
In return, the customer will receive a $5 electronic coupon that can
be used on a future purchase at the Epson Store, making customers’ net
cost $5. Individuals, businesses or organizations may recycle up to 10
products at a time. More information about the recycling program is available

Foveon Announces Licensee of X3
Foveon, Inc., recently announced a license agreement for the manufacture
and distribution of Foveon’s highly acclaimed X3 image sensor technology
to National Semiconductor. The agreement expands Foveon’s market
reach for the Foveon X3 and related technologies. “Foveon has developed
a large portfolio of image sensor products and image capture technologies
that we are bringing to market through partners. Through National’s
worldwide sales and marketing organization we will see the accelerated
adoption of X3-based products in key markets,” said Jim Lau CEO
of Foveon.
