WPPI Spotlight
Alisha, Brook and Oprah
WPPI members and fans of daytime TV may have been surprised when on November 17, Alisha and Brook Todd of Aptos, CA were featured in one of Oprah’s million dollar weddings. They were selected by Eastman Kodak to be the wedding photographers of record, but according to Alisha, “the TV cameras took precedence in every situation.” Alisha and Brook shot 80 rolls of film during the event and the feedback from Kodak, Oprah and Oprah’s staff is that they loved the images. The pair will be entering some of the images in this year’s 16x20 print competition.
Hy Sheanin Memorial Scholarship
The entries for the annual Hy Sheanin Memorial Scholarship have been judged and a winner selected. The winner will be announced on Wednesday night, March 23 at the awards banquet at BALLY’s, Las Vegas. The WPPI staff was impressed by the quality of the submissions and the sincerity and genuine emotion expressed by the applicants.
The Marings Make People
The November 29th edition of People Magazine featured a six-page spread of pictures by WPPI members Charles and Jennifer Maring of Maring Photography in Wallingford, CT. The event was the wedding of Star Jones (one of the hosts of the ABC morning talk show, The View) and Wall Street banker, Al Reynolds. To be sure, this was one of the mega social events of the year. The guest list featured such notables as Senator Hillary Clinton, Natalie Cole, Spike Lee, Chris Rock, Donald Trump and Barbara Walters, to name a few. In addition to the six-page spread, The Marings, who recently opened a Manhattan office, also got the cover of the magazine. Visit maringphoto.com for quotes from the bride and groom and other info about the wedding.
New Commercial Category in 16x20 Print Competition
This year marks a restructuring of the Awards of Excellence Print Competition. We will be eliminating the Digital/Special Effects category, and in its place we are instituting a brand new Commercial category. Here’s how Commercial will break down:
a) Industrial, Technical and Scientific photography
b) Editorial and Fashion photography
c) Fine Art photography
d) Illustrative photography.
Awards of Excellence Album Competition Online
The newly restructured album competition rules and guidelines as well as the entry form is now online at the WPPI web site. Visit: http://www.wppinow.com/competition/albumcomp.tml for more information. At the bottom of the page is a PDF link to download the entry form. As you may have heard, the album competition will be quite different this year. Instead of 35mm slides, albums must be submitted as JPEGs on a CD. The album will be presented and judged in the slide show format.
