The Hy Sheanin Memorial Scholarship Fund

Last year the photographic industry lost a very special person, Hy Sheanin. Father of Rangefinder publisher, Steve Sheanin, Hy was a founder of Rangefinder Publishing Company and along with Steve, founded WPPI 30 years ago, filling a long needed niche for the wedding photographer.

Over the years WPPI has grown to be a driving force in professional photography. In keeping with WPPI’s tradition of excellence in education and to honor the memory of Hy, we’re very excited to announce the Hy Sheanin Memorial Scholarship.

The qualifications for this scholarship are as follows:
• You must be new to professional photography, either an assistant or a recent graduate
• You must submit ten unmounted images no larger than 8x10
• Include a cover letter with 50–100 words on why you should be considered for the scholarship
• Include a brief resume

The scholarship recipient will receive:
• Round-trip airfare (within U.S.) to Las Vegas for WPPI 2004
• Free registration for the newly founded WPPI Plus and to the WPPI convention
• Eight nights lodging at the WPPI hosting hotel
• One year free membership in WPPI

Starting this month there will be a page devoted to the scholarship on the WPPI web site [www.wppinow.com]. This is a great opportunity for those who are new to professional photography to participate in eight days of solid instruction at WPPI 2004. Apply today!

Title: “Ballerina Sitting”
Original photo client: Mavis Tracy Ballet School
Camera: Kodak DCS 760 digital
Lens: Nikon 50mm f/2.0
Photo Background: Les Brandt
Painting software: Corel Painter 7
Painting hardware: Apple Macintosh PowerBook G4 with Wacom Intuos2 6x8 graphics tablet
Comments: When David took the original photograph, he was looking for an image to promote the Mavis Tracy Ballet School that would have a “Degas” feel. Their old ads had always been rather plain and they wanted an image for their ads that would catch peoples’ attention and excite their imagination. The model is Lindsay McGlinn, a ballet instructor at the school. Jeremy reinterpreted David’s original photograph as a pastel drawing in the Degas style using Corel Painter 7.

For more information on how this image was made, turn to page 8 for the article “Getting Creative with Painter,” by Jeremy Sutton.
