The Last Word by NYXOLYNO CANGEMI
“Rescued”
THIS PHOTO and many others were taken and filed on
August 30, 2005, in New Orleans, LA, in the hours after Hurricane
Katrina ripped through New Orleans and other Gulf
Coast towns. Petty Officer NyxoLyno Cangemi is a young
working photographer for the U.S. Coast Guard and frequent
contributor to Rangefinder. As one of the first photographers
on the scene, a number of his photos were picked up by major
news organizations, including the Los Angeles Times and
Newsweek. In the days that followed the disaster, Cangemi
stayed close to the action and was on board several of the
U.S. Coast Guard’s HH-65 Jayhawk rescue helicopters as they
evacuated families from their homes. Of the dozen or more
powerful images Nyx emailed us during those days, none is
more poignant than the one above of this family. They were
among 11 survivors rescued from an apartment building in
New Orleans.
