The Last Word Chase Jarvis

“Snowrun”

photo COPYRIGHT © CHASE JARVIS

This is another catalog shoot and another outtake. All of the images from this series didn’t make the final cut for the apparel catalog client, and I don’t know why. Instead, images from this series were recently licensed to McDonald’s for a substantial billboard campaign advertising some new ice cream treat. This image is all about the light. There were no strobes. It was 100 percent natural—just a great exposure. We were set up on a golf course, shooting this winter running theme, and I’d gotten entirely preoccupied with the footprints in the snow. Over and over, I shot the cropped shots of the clothing with the model’s footprints tailing out of the frame. In between takes, I squatted down to grab something from my assistant at the camera bag, and I saw the snow texture and the naked horizon. Bam. That was the shot. We sent our model, Jon Bryant, back and forth a few times, shooting a couple different exposures. We knew we had it in the can.

The image was made in Bend, Oregon. I used a Nikon F5 and Fujifilm Provia film.
