Bill, I was just wondering if someone, such as an agency or
company, awards web sites for excellence in design, etc. Do you know of
anything like that?
FWA, or Favorite Website Awards, recognizes some of the best and most
cutting-edge designs on the Internet. FWA’s site, www.favouritewebsiteawards.com,
also links to a series of web site awards including those on macromedia.com
and yahoo.com. The Macromedia site features the best of the best sites using
Flash and Shockwave. The Yahoo site features the most stylish web site designs.
Another site worth visiting is www.webbyawards.com/. The Webbys are the leading
international award honoring excellence in web design, creativity, usability
and functionality. For the best student awards visit USA Today’s site,
www.usatoday.com/tech/webguide/front.htm .

I am considering opening a retail store relating to digital
photography. Do you know of any studies or research on the demographics
of digital camera and/or digital camcorder buyers?
Your best bet is to visit pmai.org/. They have tons of data you can sift
through. PMA’s Newsline and Newsline Forum feature the most up-to-date
marketing information, often sorted by category, plus the latest news from
the photographic marketplace. A lot of the information is available only
if you are a PMA member, so if you are considering opening up a retail business,
you might consider joining PMA to avail yourself of their member benefits.

I took the attached photograph of my son about a
month before his third birthday, back in June of 1986. Work the numbers and
you’ll find that he just turned
21 last month. I have always kept a collection of materials in the “reading
room,” and he apparently found an interesting article in this issue of
Rangefinder. (I still keep more current issues in the same place!)
Our son,
Joe, is a member of the Ohio State University marching band. While in Columbus
over the Labor Day weekend I made some nice photos of him. He thinks this is
amusing, but his concern is that the band’s pro photographer
(Ed Crockett) might also get Rangefinder and that this photo might end up on
the Jumbotron in the stadium when he dots the “i.”
(If you’re
not familiar with Big Ten football traditions, The Ohio State marching band
marches a “Script Ohio” at all of the games. At the
end, to the screaming cheers of 100,000 people, a tuba player marches out and
dots the “i” in Ohio.)
Good to see that Joe still reads Rangefinder.

One of my Canon F1 bodies has a broken rewind crank
handle. My usual repair sources tell me that these instruments are long
obsolete and no parts are available. Could you suggest a supplier who might
have this small part?
Morgantown Camera & Video Repair (99 Holland Ave., Westover, WV 26501;
phone: (800) 564-9284; web site: www.mcvr.com/) does some repairs on F1s but
says to call first with the nature of the repair as parts are limited.
