The Last Word Richard McDowell
Eye of the Storm

“Eye of the Storm”

This photograph was taken with a Nikon D1X in Saskatchewan, Canada. It was shot at 24mm in manual exposure mode at an exposure of 1/60 at f/11, with available light, using a silver reflector as fill.

Remembering back, it was a very hot and humid day, and we knew we would have limited shooting time as a prairie storm was fast approaching. “Eye of the Storm” was a photo I had envisioned for some time, but I could not have imagined a more dramatic backdrop.

Within minutes of setting up and capturing the shot, the ominous clouds and eerie silence developed into one the worst summer storms of that year. We later learned that the plow winds that developed from this storm caused extensive damage. Many of the local farms lost buildings and trees due to the excessive winds. It was an interesting day that model Amy Sayers and I will always remember, and it teaches us that when we least expect it, Mother Nature can turn an image into a beautiful work of art.
