Insight/On the Cover by Bill Hurter
The wedding issue of Rangefinder provides us the opportunity to bring you the finest
work being done by today’s top wedding photographers. Many of the names may
be new to you, and many of the photographers are young, up-and-coming photographers
making an impact on the world of wedding photography.
The face of wedding photography is changing as rapidly now as at any time since
brides and grooms were first photographed. Trends in other areas, such as fine art
and editorial reportage, heavily influence both the portraits and more spontaneous
images of today’s weddings, and the influence of Photoshop in finished work is universally
accepted.
A few of the standouts featured in this issue are: Greg Gibson (pg. 12), a two-time
Pulitzer Prize winner turned wedding photographer; Bruce Hamilton Dorn (pg.
24), an award-winning cinematographer turned wedding specialist; Fernando Basurto
(pg. 52), who creates stylized, very grainy and very beautiful black-and-white
wedding images; Mauricio Donelli (pg. 60), a Renaissance man who is also well
known for his fine art portraits and nudes; Jerome Spivey (pg. 78), who combines
various media, including video, into his impressive wedding coverage; Marie Labbancz
(pg. 84), whose vast creative talents have catapulted her wedding photography
into the national limelight; Australian Marcus Bell (pg. 106), whose award-winning
wedding work is a matter of timing so every image conveys emotion; Tom Muñoz
(pg. 130), an accomplished 22-year-old who has been shooting weddings since the
age of 12; and Claudia Kronenberg (pg. 206), a gifted photographer and equally impressive
promoter. Other fine wedding photographers covered in this issue are Michael
Kitata, Dina Douglass, Norman Phillips, Neal Clipper, William Yeo, Doug
and Chenin Boutwell, Deidre Buck, Neil Van Niekerk, Travis Broxton, Mark and
Joseph Ellis, Jill Person and Laurén Killian, Deborah Lynn Ferro, Kenneth Morgan,
Dennis Orchard, Claude Jodoin, and Bill Fredericks.

COMMENTS: We are just so lucky. We have wonderful
clients who bring us to such inspiring locations! After
one of our annual autumn pilgrimages to spectacular
Jackson Hole, Wyoming, we traveled up to this bride’s
family home in nearby Bozeman, Montana. Leaving
Ashley’s fiancé, Leif, to enjoy a romp with their brandnew
puppy, Bean, we took the beautiful bride into the
nearby wheat fields for a spontaneous dusk portrait
session. Cowboy boots and a summer-weight hat
added the perfect punctuation to this country girl’s stroll.
My Canon 70–200mm f/2.8 IS zoom, used at 200mm, graphically compressed the scene for this
simple but dynamic composition.
The best images were captured in RA W format, tweaked in Photoshop CS2, and hand-rendered
on a Wacom Intuos3 tablet using Corel’s amazing Painter IX software. This particular image looks
absolutely stunning when printed on Photo Impressionism® Select Canvas with our amazing
wide-format Canon W8400 pigment-based printer.
