April 2013 Insight
April 10, 2013
As this issue was being produced, the Rangefinder and WPPI teams were in the midst of several exciting, albeit somewhat chaotic, events and transitions: we moved office buildings (from the East Village to almost the end of the city limits, near Wall Street!); we put on WPPI 2013 in Las Vegas with Jason Groupp helping to steer the ship; and we started gearing up for events and editorial content that we are super excited to bring you during the next six months. WPPI Las Vegas may be over, but the “On The Road” shows are just about to begin, with the first one taking place in Chicago in May (see ontheroadphotoshow.com for a full listing).Speaking of May, that’s the issue where we will present a FULL show wrap-up, in striking visuals and descriptive copy, on WPPI 2013, including a roundup of products, trends and technologies that emerged from the show. Stay tuned!
For this issue, we delve into fine-art tools, techniques and creative insights photographers are using to make their work conceptual, inventive and simply stunning. Take, for example, our cover photographer, Paul Ernest, who draws inspiration from film, and shows others how to do the same in “Cinematic Life”; the fantastical, fairy-tale based images of João Carlos in “Great Inspiration”; and Bambi Cantrell on how she uses black-and-white to its fullest potential in “Going Monochromatic.” Take a tour through the world of alternative photographic processes in “Everything Old is New Again" and learn why the print album is still in vogue in “Pushing Print”. Until we meet again, we hope this issue inspires you to take your art—whatever it may be—to the next level.

Comments: “Throughout this life we experience struggles as well as opportunities, and we rarely travel through them alone. It’s through our relationships with those around us—our “kindred spirits”— that we open doors, experience all of life’s joys, and at times take comfort in our losses and fears. In all of these things we do them together, embracing one another.
