August 02, 2013 —
Why is it that well before summer ends, the media blitz for the school season goes into overdrive and, as August arrives, images abound of backpacks and ruled notebooks, dorm setups, and kids driving themselves off to college? I’m still going to the beach and barbecuing!
Nonetheless, here we are with our own Back To School issue and this one is jam-packed with education, inspiration and amazing photography. In “Refreshing the Senior Portrait,” Leslie Kerrigan, Kristin Sweeting and Charleton Churchill present us with their own rules of success for tackling the high school senior photo market; “Mentor Match-up” takes an inside look at how successful wedding photographers find great assistants and second shooters; and “Sports-Mad in South Africa” takes us on a journey through the fast-moving sports market with school photographer John Hishin. And because you’re never too old to learn something new, “Take a Photo Retreat” outlines seven workshops coming this fall and winter that help you get inspired by pros in new and exotic surroundings. For more immediate inspiration, take a look at Our Back to School Contest winners gallery. Also in this issue is a roundup of quality bags under $100; a look at the photo market on Nantucket through the eyes of local photographer, Cary Hazlegrove, and the second edition of our new column, Building Buzz, which this month focuses on the luxe experience offered to clients of D. Park Photography.
And if you are reading this right at the start of the month, you may still have time to sign up for our WPPI On the Road show in Las Vegas, August 5 and 6. Visit wppionline.com for more information. And remember, summer isn’t quite over yet. Happy grilling!
