Ryan Millman started Nations Photo Lab in 2005 as a natural extension of another business, GreekYearbook, a fraternity and sorority portraiture company he launched as a college student in 1999. Realizing his greatest overhead was outsourcing printing, he started Nations to produce work for GreekYearbook and offer services to other photographers as well, says Ashley Reeder, director of public relations at Nations.
Today the full-service lab’s product lines include stretched canvases, albums, photo books and specialty press products. It plans to launch several new product lines this year, which might not surprise many of its customers.
“Everybody sort of sees us as this really innovative, savvy, go-getting team,” Reeder says. “So product development and innovation are definitely at the forefront of what we’re doing. We’re really trying to stay on top of trends to give our customer base the next big thing instead of being at the tail end of those trends.”
Three popular items, for instance, are Sweet Frames, which are distressed and aged-looking wooden frames; Gallery Blocks, which are customizable wood blocks on which prints are mounted; and Cube Décor, which combines photography, design and text on a dimensional cube. “All three of these popular product lines speak to a more boutique-minded customer looking for high-quality, innovative products,” Reeder says.
Nations also offers competitive prices, superior quality and top-notch customer service, Reeder says. Live chat is available on the company’s Web site, for instance, and Nations has a social networking team that engages with customers.
