Moab by Legion Paper was born in 2006 when Legion Paper, a large manufacturer and supplier of fine art paper, acquired Moab and merged the brands. Today Moab represents the digital arm of Legion Paper. “People look to Moab for a very high-end, fine art, inkjet paper but at an affordable price,” says Marc Schotland, Legion Paper’s vice president of marketing and global development.
After the acquisition, the company kept its two flagship papers, Entrada and Somerset, but had more work to do. “We rebuilt everything else from the ground up, so we had new coating, new substrates, everything,” Schotland says.
Today Entrada, which is 100 percent cotton and is made domestically, is a popular product. “It has a nice, heavyweight, fine-art feel to the paper and the coating produces deep, dark blacks with a wide color gamut that photographers demand these days,” Schotland says, adding that its subtle texture “enhances an image but really doesn’t take away the focus from the image.”
Last June, Moab launched its Slickrock Metallic Pearl paper amid requests from customers seeking paper with a metallic surface. “The demand really was strong when we launched it,” Schotland says. “Then it won a few awards, and sales have been very brisk, and we’re looking to actively expand that Slickrock family into other papers.”
