More than 35 years ago Larry Abitbol was printing his own photographs in an old storage area in Santa Cruz, California. Other local shooters started asking him to print their images, and the growing demand led Abitbol to open Bay Photo Lab in 1976.

The lab has expanded beyond prints, and top sellers include its flush mount Pacific Album, Giclée Canvas Gallery Wraps, MetalPrints, and the frameless ThinWraps.

In late 2011, the company introduced Creative Edge Cards, which are press printed, die-cut cards that can be flat or folded. It also debuted metal versions called Creative Edge MetalPrints, which create a modern look and offer other benefits, too. “Because [a MetalPrint] is impervious to moisture and because the longevity of it is just as good as high-end photo paper, it’s pretty much one of the best ways to print your work for a lasting print,” says Sarah Bergeron, an assistant to Abitbol.

Bergeron says the company is expanding and has new offerings on the way. Notably, it doesn’t just seek ideas from within. “We love to listen to our customers and grow from that,” she says. “We’re not a cookie cutter lab that only offers certain sizes and certain products. We love to get ideas and love to challenge ourselves to make something new.”
