Deepak “Baboo” Kumar offered film duplication, color correction and film processing when he opened Baboo in 1977 in a single room in a New York City building. He became known for his eye for color and ability to reproduce images with consistency.
Today the company specializes in high-end work and has broad offerings that include fine-art printing, wide-format printing and custom mounting. (Plexiglas mounting is a popular service, and the Gallery Plexi mount is available in clear, non-glare and ultra non-glare finishes.)
Baboo is in a much larger space now, and it uses part of its shop as a gallery for clients. “We don’t show anything we haven’t done start to finish,” says Neil Kumar, Deepak’s son and partner. “I tell [customers], ‘This is your wall space, use it.’”
The lab has about 10 employees and many of its clients appreciate Baboo’s customer service. “There’s a definite advantage to going to a smaller, ‘boutique-type’ shop,” Neil says. “You’re going to be talking to the manager or the owner or be one very small step away from [them]. There’s a lot of personal attention.”
Many customers seek the staff’s technical expertise. “We’re not shy about giving our opinions if they want our opinions,” Neil says. “We see tons of photography every day.”
Baboo is also able to handle orders quickly because it does everything in-house. “That’s something my father is a big stickler for because he likes to have quality control,” Neil says, adding that Baboo even does mounting work for other labs.
