Arnold Newman

Arnold Newman Exhibit at International Photography Hall of Fame
The International Photography Hall of Fame (405/424-4055, www.iphf.org) will present a retrospective exhibition featuring the works of world-renowned photographer Arnold Newman from July 9 to December 31. Titled “Arnold Newman: A Life in Photography,” the special showing will feature Newman’s celebrated portraits, some of his abstract work as well as photographs and information about the man behind the camera, his family and his views on photography.

For more than 60 years Newman has photographed prominent individuals, including John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, Marilyn Monroe, Georgia O’Keeffe and Igor Stravinsky. He is well known as the father of environmental portraiture, where subjects are photographed in their own surroundings. He chose this style of photography because he preferred the risk of failure in experimentation to the alternative of safe repetition and boredom.

Born in New York City in 1918, Newman began focusing on photography at the age of 20. Ten years later he was a freelance photographer for Life, Esquire, the New Yorker and Newsweek magazines. His professional colleagues and friends include Alfred Stieglitz, Beaumont Newhall, Bernice Abbott and Man Ray. The author of numerous books, Newman continues to photograph and exhibit. His interests include what motivates individuals, what they do with their lives, their personalities and how he perceives and interprets them.

The Arnold Newman special exhibition and artist presentation is sponsored in part by Canon USA.
